Court denies bail to Abba Kyari, co-defendants

Justice Emeka Nwite has refused to grant bail to Abba Kyari, the suspended deputy commissioner of police, along with two other suspended senior officers.

In his rulings, Justice Nwite stated that the defendants failed to provide sufficient evidence to justify the court’s discretion in their favour.

The judge emphasized the need for the court to exercise its discretion judiciously and concluded that bail could not be granted in this instance.

Kyari was arrested on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for his alleged involvement in a cocaine trafficking case.

Along with four other suspended officers, Kyari was arraigned on March 7, 2022.

Two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, who were apprehended at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, were also charged.

They are accused of dealing 17.55 kilograms of cocaine, in violation of section 14(b) of the NDLEA Act, CAP N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Previously, the court denied bail to the defendants and ordered their detention in Kuje prison.
