In a tragic development amidst the ongoing local government leadership crisis in Rivers State, gunmen suspected to be cultists have claimed the life of Endwell Awunze in Ula-Pata-Ahoada, Ahaoda Local Government Area.
Awunze, a dedicated oil pipeline surveillance worker, was known for his advocacy against cultism and other violent crimes within the Okporowo community of Ahoada East LGA. Sources report that he was targeted and fatally shot on Tuesday night while returning from a protest against the tenure extension of local government chairmen near Ahoada East Council.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that Awunze was ambushed by three gunmen along Ula-Pata road, who opened fire on his motorbike. Tragically, Awunze succumbed to his injuries on the spot, while the motorbike driver sustained gunshot wounds and was hospitalized.
As of Wednesday morning, Awunze’s body remained at the crime scene, underscoring the severity of the incident. The Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue a statement regarding the attack.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Basic Rights Protection And Accountability Campaign expressed grave concern over the escalating violence, cautioning that the political turmoil could embolden criminal elements. Comrade Prince Wiro, National Coordinator of the organization, urged all political stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and avoid inciting further unrest.
“I am deeply concerned that the current crisis may provide fertile ground for criminal elements to thrive,” Wiro stated. “We call on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in maintaining security amidst the escalating tensions.”
The incident has sparked fears among residents, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action to restore peace and stability in Rivers State.
