Anxiety in Oyo Assembly over planned suspension of 11 lawmakers

Tension is mounting within the Oyo State House of Assembly following plans to suspend eleven lawmakers, according to reports from DAILY POST. The assembly, which comprises 32 members, is considering the suspension of all eleven legislators who are serving their first term.

Among those targeted for suspension, seven belong to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and four to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP lawmakers include Olorunpoto Oluwafemi (Oyo East/Oyo West constituency), Olufunke Comforter (Ibadan North constituency I), Abiodun Babalola (Ibadan North East constituency I), Waheed Akintayo (Oluyole constituency), Bisi Oluranti Micheal (Ogbomoso North), Olajide Operinde (Afijio constituency), and Dauda Olalere (Ibadan North West). The APC lawmakers are Ibraheem Shittu (Saki West), Abdulazeez Musbau (Kajola constituency), Jimoh Lukman (Oorelope constituency), and Ayinde Waliu (Irepo/Olorunsogo constituency).

Sources within the assembly indicated that Speaker Adebowale Ogundoyin, under whose leadership the decision is being made, is considering the suspension due to allegations that these lawmakers undermined the House leadership. Allegations include reporting the Speaker to the governor, claiming marginalization, and mishandling of benefits meant for them.

Reacting to the developments, lawmaker Waheed Akintayo denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing his commitment to the governor and Speaker while asserting that he has not violated any House rules.

In response to inquiries, the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media, Oyetunji Oyekunle, confirmed that the House will convene on Thursday to address the matter.
