The Port Harcourt division of the Court of Appeal on Monday dismissed two appeals filed by Local Government Chairmen loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, citing lack of merit.
The appeals, identified as CA/PH/137M/2024 and CA/PH/145M/2024, were filed by Hon. Enyiada Cookey-Gam and six others. They contested decisions of the lower court regarding the extension of council leadership tenure.
The Court of Appeal ruled the appeals to be without merit and subsequently struck them out.
The extension of the tenure for 23 local Chairmen, which was set to expire in June, was amended by lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule, who are loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of Federal Capital Territory.
Despite Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s refusal to assent to the Bill, the lawmakers proceeded to override his decision and enact the Bill into Law.
