NiMet issues urban flood alert across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rains across the country from Sunday to Tuesday, issuing urban flood alerts to the public.

According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Saturday, thunderstorms are expected on Sunday morning in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Kebbi, Kaduna, Gombe, and Yobe. Later in the day, the entire northern region is forecasted to experience thunderstorms.

The North-Central region is also expected to see rains in the morning, with moderate thunderstorms and rains anticipated in parts of Abuja, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi.

Intermittent rains are predicted for Sunday morning over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Delta. In the afternoon and evening, intermittent rains are expected in parts of Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

For Monday, NiMet predicts morning thunderstorms with rains in parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba, and Katsina. Later in the day, moderate thunderstorms are expected over parts of Jigawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Zamfara, Yobe, Adamawa, and Katsina.

In the North-Central region, rains are anticipated in parts of Abuja and Plateau states during the morning hours, with moderate thunderstorms and rains expected later in the day over parts of Abuja, Niger, and Kogi.

The forecast also includes intermittent rains over parts of Edo, Rivers, and Delta with a cloudy atmosphere over the remaining southern states. In the afternoon and evening, moderate or intermittent rains are expected over parts of Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers.

According to NiMet, morning thunderstorms are predicted on Tuesday, with rains over parts of Yobe, Adamawa, Borno, and Taraba. The agency forecast thunderstorms over the entire northern region later in the day.

It predicted rains over parts of Abuja, Niger and Kwara, with cloudy skies over the remaining states during the morning hours. In the afternoon or evening hours, intermittent rains are expected over part of Abuja, Kwara and Niger.

There are prospects of morning rains over parts of Edo, Delta, Imo and Anambra, with cloudy skies anticipated over the remaining parts of the southern region, said NiMet.

Later in the day, intermittent rains are expected over parts of Ondo, Edo, Osun, Ekiti, Oyo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta and Bayelsa.

NiMet advised the public to take adequate precautions as strong winds might precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms were likely to occur.

It further advised the residents to avoid flood-prone areas as there is a high likelihood of urban flooding in major cities could occur due to downpours.
