Two labourers face prosecution for allegedly stealing court property

Two labourers, Hammed Idowu, 28 and Joshua Ogundele, 18, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly stealing a door handle and engine valued at N250,000, from their employer.

The defendants were among the labourers renovating the court.

The police charged the defendants, of undisclosed addresses, with stealing, to which they, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Inspector Femi Oluwadare, told the court that the defendants, on July 25, at about 2 p.m., conspired together to commit the offence.

Mr Oluwadare said that the defendants worked as labourers with the artisans fixing the door and the stolen door handles, engines, hangers and hinges, all made of brass, with a total value of N250,000.

According to him, the offence contravenes Sections 360(6) and 516(A) of the Criminał Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Chief Magistrate, M. Mudashiru, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

Mr Mudashiru said that one of the sureties must be parents of the defendants, while the others must be gainfully employed.

He, thereafter, adjourned the matter until September 5 for hearing.
