Internet services on MTN face severe disruption amid hunger protests – Report

A report by the internet observatory group NetBlocks has revealed a significant disruption of internet services on the MTN network since the #EndBadGovernance protests began last Thursday.

“Network data shows a disruption to leading internet provider MTN in Nigeria; the incident may limit the visibility of #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests; the operator states it is working to resolve the issue,” NetBlocks posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Since the protests commenced across several states on August 1, MTN subscribers have reported sudden difficulties accessing the internet, particularly social media platforms.

Data published by NetBlocks indicated that internet connectivity on MTN dropped to as low as 40 percent on the day the demonstrations started, compared to a connectivity rate of no less than 80 percent in the six days leading up to the protests.

This situation has raised concerns among Nigerians that the disruption of internet connectivity could limit the visibility and global reach of the ongoing protests.
