Home explosion kills couple in Ebonyi

A couple, George and Chioma Buchi, lost their lives in an explosion at their home in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State.

The couple resided in the Water Works Road area and had recently built their home.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear, with conflicting reports attributing it to different sources. Some claim a solar light battery inverter caused the blast, others believe it was a gas cylinder, while another theory suggests an explosive device was planted in the compound.

A neighbor, Nwokporo Victor Uchechukwu, recounted the event, saying, “It happened on my street. We heard a loud explosion in the afternoon. When we rushed to the scene, we saw smoke coming from the newly built house. The electronics were destroyed, and the damage extended to the ceiling, doors, windows, and shattered glass everywhere.”

“At first we thought it was a gas cylinder explosion. Or may be any inverter; only God knows what was implanted in that house. It sounded like a bomb.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident.

“They have been in the hospital, the wife died first. She is the sister of Partoranking. Her husband now died yesterday September 11, 2024.

“I have not confirmed what led to the incident, whether it was a battery inverter or a gas cylinder in the house. We don’t have any confirmed facts about it.
