Edo polls: CLEEN Foundation urges prosecution of electoral offenders

CLEEN Foundation has called for the investigation and prosecution of electoral offenders involved in the 2024 Edo State Governorship Election.

In its interim statement on Sunday, the Foundation commended the efforts of security personnel in ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

The foundation however, expressed concern over several incidents of vote buying and the role of political thugs.

“During the election held on Saturday, 21st September, CLEEN Foundation deployed observers across the state to monitor the conduct of security personnel.

“The Foundation reported that while there was a general feeling of safety among voters, instances of vote trading were widespread in several polling units, with some security personnel allegedly turning a blind eye.

“Vote trading was observed across most of the polling units in the state.”

The foundation further noted specific cases in Ikpoba-Okha, Igueben, and Uhunmwode LGAs.

It added that in some cases, the presence of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC officials led to arrests, but the practice continued when they left.

“At polling unit 007, Ward 06 in Uhunmwode LGA, EFCC officials arrested a female vote buyer, but she was later released after refusing to enter the EFCC vehicle.”

CLEEN Foundation emphasized the importance of bringing those involved in electoral malpractices to justice.

“We call for the investigation and prosecution of political thugs, vote traders, and other criminals arrested during the election,” the Foundation urged.

They also stressed that accountability is necessary to serve as a deterrent ahead of future elections, including the upcoming Ondo State Governorship Election.

Despite these issues, CLEEN commended the security personnel deployed for the election.

“Their display of professionalism has contributed to the peaceful nature of the election,” the report noted.

However, it also called for improved coordination between law enforcement agencies and electoral bodies to prevent further disruptions, especially during the collation of results.
