Military torture: Suicide of 13-year-old in Kaduna sparks demand for justice

The Hashimu family of Ungwan Maigero Community in Kaduna State is reeling from the loss of their 13-year-old son, Wisdom, who tragically took his own life following an alleged incident of brutality by a soldier and members of the civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) in the area.

Wisdom, who lived with his parents on Lafiya Sarki Street in Chikun Local Government Area, was falsely accused of stealing N10,000 from a neighbor. Reports suggest he was subjected to severe torture by a soldier and civilian JTF members.

The teenager, who was in the midst of writing his Junior Secondary School examination, endured a brutal beating on June 1, 2024, allegedly orchestrated by a soldier and civilian JTF members. Accused of stealing money from a neighbor, the situation escalated when the soldier intervened, dragging Wisdom and the accused neighbor to the civilian JTF office.

At the office, Wisdom faced further brutality, leaving him unable to walk. Despite receiving medical attention and returning home, tragedy struck on June 6, 2024, when Wisdom’s lifeless body was discovered hanging in the backyard of their compound.

The grieving parents are demanding justice, recounting the events leading to their son’s untimely death. They seek accountability for those responsible for the alleged brutality.

The Kaduna State Police Command has assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice is served and those responsible for Wisdom’s death are brought to justice.
