Akpabio mocks protesters, says we’ll be eating while you are out there

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has mocked those planning demonstrations over the economic hardship in the country, suggesting they go ahead with their protest “while we enjoy ourselves.”

Akpabio made the remarks at an event organized by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Tuesday in Rivers State. His comments come amidst plans for a nationwide protest by Nigerians demanding economic and political reforms.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, met with some of the protest organizers on Tuesday in Abuja, suggesting a virtual protest, but the organizers insisted on taking to the streets.

At the NDDC event, Akpabio expressed his disinterest in any “regime change,” acknowledging the current economic challenges but emphasizing they are temporary. “We all feel the impact of what is happening now. But we are aware it will be for a short while,” he said. “Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be there eating — I must thank the Niger Delta.”

He also addressed the significant damage caused by oil and gas activities in the Niger Delta region, assuring that the National Assembly is committed to addressing these issues through legislation to curb oil spillage and environmental pollution.

“The specific issues faced by the Niger Delta must be contained in that communique because we are going to make it available to Mr. President,” Akpabio stated. “The ones that need legislation will come to us, the ones that need intervention will go to NDDC, the ones that need more money will go to the president and commander-in-chief, and I assure you those issues will be addressed.”

The National Assembly, under Akpabio’s leadership, has scheduled an emergency session for the eve of the planned protest.
