Two brothers remanded for alleged unlawful firearm possession

An Osun Magistrates’ Court in Ile-Ife has ordered the remand of two brothers, Teslim Awoyefa, 48, and Taoheed Awoyefa, 42, on charges of unlawful possession of firearms.

The defendants face nine counts, including conspiracy, intent to commit a felony, unlawful possession of firearms, assault, threats, and breach of peace.

Prosecutor Sunday Osanyintuyi informed the court that the offences were committed on January 22, around 11:00 a.m., at Fashina Area, Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi stated that the defendants conspired to commit a felony involving unlawful possession of firearms, assault causing harm, and threatening violence. They were found in possession of a locally made single-barrel gun, four cartridges, and an axe.

The prosecutor detailed that the defendants used an axe to injure Mayowa Olumide and threatened to kill him.

They also threatened Oba Adeshina Ogunwusi and Owoniyi Olumide while armed with dangerous weapons, which created terror, fear, and panic in the community.

Furthermore, the prosecutor alleged that the defendants’ actions caused a public disturbance, leading to the disruption of peace in the area.

The charges are in violation of sections 2, 86, 249(d), 355, and 517 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 34, Vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2002.

Defense counsel Adebusola Adedoyin requested bail for the defendants, assuring the court that they would not flee if granted bail.

Magistrate Abosede Sarumi asked their lawyer to come with a written application for consideration of their bail.

Sarumi ordered the remand of the defendants in the Ile-Ife Nigerian Correctional Service.She adjourned the case until August 28, for mention.
