Iran: Helicopter carrying President Raisi reportedly crashes

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has reportedly crashed.

Allnews.ng gathered the aircraft made a rough landing on Sunday. However, no additional information has been supplied, according to Iranian official TV.

According to the press, it is unknown whether the President was on board at the sad occurrence. The incident occurred in Jolfa, a city in Iran’s East Azerbaijan region that borders Azerbaijan.

The crash landing occurred around 600 kilometres (375 miles) northwest of Tehran, Iran’s capital. Despite the inclement weather, rescuers are working to reach the spot.

Heavy rain and high gusts have been recorded throughout the region. Raisi allegedly travelled to Azerbaijan on Sunday to attend the dam’s opening with President Ilham Aliyev. The dam is the third collaborative project between the two countries on the Aras River.

Iran maintains a wide range of helicopters within its borders, but international sanctions make it difficult to get spare parts. The majority of its military aircraft fleet predates the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Raisi, 63, is known for his hardline attitude and previously served as head of Iran’s judiciary. He is considered a protege of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, and some commentators predict that he may succeed the 85-year-old leader upon his retirement or death.
