Kano Emirate Crisis: Deposed Emir Bayero holds first ceremonial sitting in Mini Palace

Deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero on Monday conducted his first ceremonial sitting at the Nasarawa Mini Palace.

Emir Bayero, since his return to the ancient city on Saturday amid the legal tussles following his dethronement, is being relocated to the Mini Palace.

The embattled Emir received supporters and some district heads who paid him homage, signaling that the sacked monarch still regards himself as the legitimate Emir of Kano.

Bayero’s claim to the throne when the Kano State Government reinstated Muhammad Sanusi II gave rise to controversies from different quarters that, for the first time in the history of the state, there are two reigning emirs in Kano.

Meanwhile, LEADERSHIP reports that the reinstated emir, Muhammad Sanusi II has also been conducting ceremonial sitting at the Main palace where 40 out of the 65 district heads in the state have paid him homage so far.

The reports also said that the power struggle between Sanusi and Bayero for the royal stool has thrown the state into controversies after Governor Abba Yusuf signed the  Kano State Emirates Council Law on Thursday, followed by the issuance of reappointment letter to Sanusi on Friday.

The governor also ordered the five emirs affected by the law, including Bayero, to vacate their palaces within 48 hours.

However, the state police command had on Saturday vowed to enforce a pending court order barring the  Kano State Government from reinstating Sanusi as the Emir of Kano pending the determination of a substantive case before it.

Currently, Bayero remains at the Nasarawa mini palace, protected by a heavy security presence while Sanusi operates from the Main Palace secured by vigilantes and local hunters.

Tension reached a peak on Sunday as Bayero’s supporters lit bonfires on major roads, protesting and chanting anti-government songs.

The  Kano State Police Commissioner, CP Muhammad Usaini Gumel revealed at a press conference last night, that security agencies had uncovered a plot by miscreants to attack the State House of Assembly and other strategic locations within the state.

Gumel emphasised the need for vigilance and calm as the security agencies work to maintain order.
