Edo Govt warns against unlawful cult gatherings on July 7

The Edo State government has issued a stern warning against unlawful gatherings by cult groups under the guise of celebrating anniversaries, particularly on July 7. This caution was communicated through a statement by Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communications, in Benin City on Saturday.

The government has directed the police to be on high alert, ready to arrest and prosecute any group that violates the state’s anti-cultism law.

The statement emphasized, “In our renewed effort to combat cultism, the state government advises youths to avoid any unlawful gatherings on July 7, 2024, which may be disguised as cult group anniversaries. Reliable information from security agencies indicates that the Aiye (Black Axe) cult plans to celebrate its anniversary on this date, potentially leading to rivalries and attacks on other cult groups.”

It continued, “The state government reminds all cult groups and their members of the anti-cultism law, which strictly prohibits their activities. Parents and guardians should also caution their wards against participating in any cult gatherings.”

Furthermore, the government reassured the public that security agencies are on high alert to ensure the safety of lives and property throughout the state. Citizens are encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear.
